I painted the orange sun
most mornings through today.
Now I’m starting a new routine,
I’ve got a living to make.
I don’t know how long I can pretend to be someone else,
if my job
means giving up.
I know money’s not worth living in compromise,
but paying bills means
giving up, giving up, giving up on what I love.
Oh I use my degree,
I make paint in a lab all day,
but when I get home after working, filling my nose, toxic chemicals
killed the man inside of me.
I don’t know how long I can pretend to be someone else,
if my job
means giving up.
I know money’s not worth living in compromise,
but paying bills means
giving up, giving up, giving up on what I love.
Now I’ve finally reached the day
where I hang my lab coat away,
but I’m poisoned, I’m lost, and I can’t recreate,
I watch my orange sunset fade away.
